About Pilates
Pilates is a system of over 500 exercises developed in the 1920's by Joseph H. Pilates. It is now a movement method focused on stretching & strengthening the body while maintaining balance & alignment. Based upon 6 key principles: Concentration, Centering, Control, Precision, Breathe & Flow. One will move with a concentration on the "power house" which includes the abdominals, pelvis, hips, buttocks & inner thighs.
Creating long, lean & uniform muscles and developing flexibility in the spine. Pilates can be practiced on a mat using ones own body for resistance and with the Pilates apparatus such as the Reformer, Cadillac, High Chair, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Pedi-Pole, Foot Corrector & Toe Corrector, which provide spring resistance training.
Pilates is recommended to practice 2-3 times a week, using both the apparatus & practicing mat work. The benefits of Pilates are numerous and include: increased body awareness, enhanced flexibility, restored postural alignment, conditioning of the core muscles, relieve back pain, alleviate joint stress, increase range of motion, provide recovery from injury or strain, improve circulation & balance, provide stress reduction and improve one's overall health & well being.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
~ William Arthur Ward
